Why TOTW Needed a Real Formula
Team of the Week used to be a judgment call. It's not anymore. Together with IPL captains, we built a scoring formula that weighs the stats that actually matter for each position — and applies them consistently, match after match, season after season.
One rule applies everywhere before any formula gets used: a player needs at least 2 games at a position in that week's matchday round to be eligible. One standout performance in a single game isn't enough on its own.
Two Scenarios: Full Data vs. Partial Data
EA doesn't always hand back complete stats. When a match ends in a draw, EA's data for individual players often comes back incomplete or unreliable for certain categories. To handle this fairly, every position has two versions of its formula:
- 🟢 Full data — used when the match provides complete, reliable stats.
- 🟡 Partial data / draw — a simplified formula that drops the categories EA tends to break on ties, and reweights the rest.
Position by Position
⚽ Striker (ST)
🟢 Full data: 45% Goals · 25% Rating · 20% Assists · 10% Shot Accuracy
🟡 Partial data: 50% Goals · 30% Rating · 20% Assists
🎯 CAM
🟢 Full data: 40% Assists · 25% Goals · 20% Rating · 15% Pass Accuracy
🟡 Partial data: 50% Assists · 35% Goals · 15% Rating
🪽 Winger
🟢 Full data: 25% Assists · 25% Goals · 20% Pass Accuracy · 20% Rating · 10% Tackles
🟡 Partial data: 35% Assists · 30% Goals · 35% Rating
🧱 CDM
CDM splits into two roles depending on how the player actually plays, not just the position label:
CDM 6 (Defensive): 35% Pass Accuracy · 25% Tackles · 20% Rating · 10% Clean Sheet · 5% Assists · 5% Goals
CDM 8 (Attacking): 30% Rating · 30% Pass Accuracy · 25% Tackles · 10% Assists · 5% Goals
🛡️ Centre-Back (CB)
🟢 Full data: 35% Clean Sheet · 30% Rating · 15% Tackles · 10% Goals · 5% Assists · 5% Pass Accuracy
🟡 Partial data: 40% Rating · 35% Clean Sheet · 15% Goals · 10% Assists
🧤 Goalkeeper (GK)
🟢 Full data: 35% Rating · 30% Save Percentage · 30% Clean Sheet · 5% Pass Accuracy
🟡 Partial data (no save stats): 55% Rating · 45% Clean Sheet
A Worked Example
Say two strikers are in contention for the same TOTW slot after a full-data matchday:
- Striker A: 4 goals, 1 assist, 8.4 average rating, 70% shot accuracy across 3 games.
- Striker B: 5 goals, 0 assists, 7.6 average rating, 55% shot accuracy across 2 games.
Striker B scored more, and in a "most goals wins" world they'd take the spot. But the ST formula weights Goals at 45%, Rating at 25%, Assists at 20% and Shot Accuracy at 10%. Once Striker A's higher rating, the assist, and the cleaner shot accuracy are factored in — and both cleared the 2-game minimum — A comes out ahead on the combined score. That's the whole point of the formula: it stops a single loud stat from settling a decision that should account for the full performance.
How to Actually Use This as a Player
The formula isn't just a scoreboard — it's a clear statement of what each position is judged on, which makes it a useful checklist. If you play CAM and you want TOTW recognition, the weightings tell you plainly that assists matter more than goals for your position, and that pass accuracy is a real factor. If you're a CB, the message is that a clean sheet and a solid rating outweigh the occasional goal from a set piece. Play toward what your position is actually measured on, check your numbers on the TOTW page and your season stats, and the recognition tends to follow.
Why It's Built This Way
Every weighting here reflects what that position is actually judged on. A CB who concedes 3 goals doesn't deserve TOTW no matter how high their pass accuracy is — that's why Clean Sheet and Rating dominate the CB formula. A CAM who doesn't create chances isn't doing their job — that's why Assists is weighted above Goals for that position. Nothing here is arbitrary; it came from captains who play these positions arguing about what should actually count.
Got Thoughts on the Formula?
This formula was built with input from IPL captains, and it can keep evolving the same way. If something about a specific position doesn't feel right after watching it play out over a few matchdays, that feedback is exactly what shaped it in the first place.
